Weighted average calculator
Enter each value with its weight. Weights can be percentages, credits, hours or any other numbers.
The formula
Weighted average = (value 1 x weight 1 + value 2 x weight 2 + ...) / (weight 1 + weight 2 + ...). Values with larger weights pull the result toward them.
Example: scores of 90 and 80, where the 90 counts 40% and the 80 counts 60%. The weighted average is (90 x 40 + 80 x 60) / 100 = 84.00. The simple average is 85.
Where it is used
- Course grades, where categories count different amounts. The grade calculator adds a letter grade.
- GPA, where credits are the weights. The GPA calculator does this with letter grades.
- Any average where items differ in size, like hours worked or units bought.
Weights do not need to add to 100. The formula divides by their total.
Questions people ask

A simple average gives every value the same weight. A weighted average does not.
Do the weights have to add up to 100%?
No. The calculator divides by the sum of the weights you enter.
