Final grade calculator
Enter your current grade, how much the final counts and your goal. See the score you need.
The formula
Needed score = (goal - current x (1 - weight)) / weight, with the weight as a decimal. If the final is 20% of the grade, your current grade counts for the other 80%.
Example: you have an 88, the final is worth 20% and you want a 90. You need (90 - 88 x 0.80) / 0.20 = 98.00%.
Score needed for a 90, 80 or 70, final worth 20%
| Current grade | For a 90 | For an 80 | For a 70 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 65 | 190.00 (over 100) | 140.00 (over 100) | 90.00 |
| 70 | 170.00 (over 100) | 120.00 (over 100) | 70.00 |
| 75 | 150.00 (over 100) | 100.00 | 50.00 |
| 80 | 130.00 (over 100) | 80.00 | 30.00 |
| 85 | 110.00 (over 100) | 60.00 | 10.00 |
| 90 | 90.00 | 40.00 | Already there |
| 95 | 70.00 | 20.00 | Already there |
If the final is worth more
The heavier the final, the more it can change your grade, up or down. At 40% weight, the same 88 needs 93.00% for a 90. At 10%, it needs 108.00%, which is over 100, so a 90 would not be possible without extra credit.
Use it as a guide
Some teachers curve, drop low scores or round up. Those policies are not included here. Check your syllabus.
Questions people ask
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Enter your current grade, the final's weight and 90 as your goal. The calculator shows the score you need.
What if the result is over 100%?
Then the goal is out of reach unless extra credit is available. Try a lower goal.
What if the final replaces my lowest test?
This calculator does not cover that. Work out your grade without the lowest test first, then enter it as your current grade.
What if I do not know my current grade?
Use the grade calculator to work it out from your scores.
